CEREBRAL ANGIOGRAM / DSA is an investigation done to delineate the structure of brain blood vessels and their diseases. Digital subtraction angiography is the technology used to ob-tain CEREBRAL ANGIOGRAM / DSA. The CEREBRAL ANGIOGRAM / DSA is performed in an angiography lab (angiosuite) having DSA technology.
CT Angio/MR angio are noninvasive investigations to diagnose brain blood vessel problems. However they have limitations in evaluating structural details, flow patterns especially in evaluation of complex cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulae, critical stenotic and vasculitic conditions.
The procedure is a minimally invasive investigation done through the thigh under local anaesthesia. A small nick is made in the groin region to access the blood vessel in the thigh ( femoral artery). Through the nick, a very small plastic tube is passed and tracked into the neck vessels. After that, dye is injected and serial photographs of the brain blood vessels will be taken by DSA technology.
CT Angio/MR angio are noninvasive investigations to diagnose brain blood vessel problems. However they have limitations in evaluating structural details, flow patterns especially in evaluation of complex cerebral aneurysms arteriovenous malformations dural arteriovenous fistula critical stenotic and vasculitic conditions. In these conditions, it is mandatory to do CEREBRAL ANGIOGRAM / DSA to get a correct and complete diagnosis and to plan treatment options.
The patient is required to be empty stomach for at least 6 hours before the procedure. The groin region on both sides have be shaved to keep them hairless. CEREBRAL ANGIOGRAM / DSA takes usually 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete and it can be done on a day care basis, so that in-patient admission may not be mandatory.
